Winger

I just finished reading Winger by Andrew Smith and it was great. I wasn’t prepared for this coming of age novel. The writer did a great job of taking you into the mind of a 14 year old boy through the ups and downs of 1st love, friendship, and life.

Winger takes place in a boarding school called Pine Moutain and is told from the perspective of Ryan Dean West. Ryan Dean is a 14 year old Junior in high school and a pretty comical trouble magnet. Even though he has friends and is on the varsity rugby team he still feels left out because of his age.

I honestly went into this novel thinking it would be a “fluff” read I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the book. I identified with the main character as well as the supporting characters. I enjoyed watching the relationships develop and change as well as the personal growth of Ryan Dean. I did not want to put this book down, it made me laugh, cringe, awwww, and cry. Great novel and I actually rate it 5 out of 5 stars. Happy Reading!!!!
